FAQ

Questions Teams Ask Before Switching

What is Localeway?

Localeway is a collaborative translation management system (TMS) for software and games. It keeps every string of a project in one grid, translates missing languages with AI, proofreads existing translations, and lets your team review and approve them before exporting in the file formats your code already reads.

Which file formats does Localeway support?

JSON, CSV, Android strings.xml, Apple .strings, gettext .po, Qt Linguist .ts and .NET .resx, for both import and export. For an in-house engine format, paste a sample file and Localeway infers a custom format that reads and writes it.

Do I need my own AI key?

AI translation and AI proofreading run on a key you bring, set once for the workspace or per member. Without a key, everything else still works: the translation grid, the review workflow, translation memory, glossary, import and export.

Which AI providers and models can I use?

OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Mistral, DeepSeek, Groq, xAI (Grok), OpenRouter, Perplexity and Z.ai (GLM). You choose the model for each key and pay your provider directly, with no per-word markup from Localeway.

Will AI overwrite translations my team wrote?

No. By default a run only fills empty cells. You can ask it to retranslate earlier machine output, which still leaves human-reviewed and approved translations alone. Replacing human work requires an explicit choice and a confirmation.

How does AI proofreading work?

Select strings and languages, and the proofreader checks each translation against its source, your glossary and your product profile. It reports grammar, spelling, punctuation, meaning, omission, register, terminology and structure issues in Suggestions, each with a proposed fix you can apply or ignore.

Can a translator only see their own language?

Yes. Roles set access per project (view, translate, edit or delete), and per-language access decides which translations each person may see or edit. Hidden languages are never sent to their browser.

Does Localeway work for Unreal Engine, Unity and other game engines?

Yes. Unreal Engine’s localization dashboard exchanges gettext .po files, which Localeway imports and exports with the key kept in msgctxt. Unity projects can go through CSV, Qt projects through .ts, and any other engine through a custom format inferred from a sample.

How is Localeway priced?

By the number of source strings in your projects, counted once whatever the number of languages. Every plan, including the free one, has unlimited languages and unlimited team members, so you never pay per seat or per translator. AI usage is billed by your own provider, with no markup from Localeway.

Can I automate imports and exports from CI?

Yes. The REST API, documented with OpenAPI, lets build scripts and engine plugins list projects, preview and run imports, and export any format with a scoped workspace API key.
